On Monday, the European Union (EU) Mission in Yemen condemned all violations against Yemeni journalists. The mission called for the immediate release of all abducted journalists and emphasized the need for full protection for media professionals.
In an official statement, the EU Mission highlighted that Yemeni journalists encounter significant risks while performing their duties. The mission urged an end to the culture of impunity that allows these violations to persist.
This call for action comes amid a surge in attacks on journalists in recent years. The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate has documented dozens of cases of arrest, abduction, torture, and threats, particularly in areas controlled by the Houthi militia.
Reports from international organizations, such as “Reporters Without Borders,” classify Yemen as having one of the worst environments for press freedom globally. The lack of legal accountability and ongoing violations against journalists exacerbate this crisis.
The EU Mission reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom as a fundamental pillar for building peace and promoting human rights. It urged all parties involved to respect their international obligations regarding this issue.
