UN Warns of Increased Displacement Due to Drone Strikes in Sudan

The United Nations has issued a warning that drone strikes and ongoing hostilities in Sudan are forcing more civilians to flee their homes. This situation exacerbates the humanitarian risks in Darfur, Kordofan, and Blue Nile State.

Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, reported that Blue Nile State has experienced drone attacks targeting vital facilities, resulting in civilian injuries. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that nearly 100,000 people have been displaced in the region since January, marking a 66% increase since late May.

Rising Displacement in Darfur

In North Darfur, the IOM recorded the displacement of approximately 1,200 individuals from two villages in El Fasher between September 10 and 13. This displacement followed drone strikes that targeted multiple locations in the Tine area near the Chad border.

In the Um Boro area, over 1,200 people fled during the past week, with most crossing into Chad.

In West Darfur, reports indicate drone attacks hit a fuel market in a town west of the state capital, along with bombings in two other towns, resulting in injuries.

Deteriorating Security Situation in Kordofan

Haq confirmed that the ongoing insecurity in Kordofan is increasing waves of displacement and hindering humanitarian operations. He noted that more than 7,000 people have arrived in the town of Al-Abbasiya in South Kordofan in recent weeks after fleeing surrounding villages.
