On Monday, President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, the head of the Presidential Leadership Council, welcomed UK Ambassador Abda Sharif to discuss the robust historical ties between Yemen and the United Kingdom. The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation across various sectors and prioritizing British and international support for Yemen’s recovery efforts.
During the discussion, President Alimi emphasized the importance of international assistance in rebuilding Yemen’s institutions and ensuring security and stability. He highlighted the need to combat shared threats, particularly in areas such as counter-terrorism, organized crime, and the protection of international shipping routes. The President also called for stricter sanctions against the Iran-backed Houthi militias, condemning their recent attack on a gathering of displaced persons in Al-Hayran, Hajjah Governorate.
President Alimi praised the deep-rooted historical relationship between Yemen and the UK. He acknowledged the UK’s supportive stance alongside the Yemeni people and their political leadership. He also recognized the UK’s pivotal role in the United Nations Security Council as a penholder and a key partner in promoting peace and humanitarian responses in Yemen.
The President addressed the current regional developments, noting the unprecedented military escalation, including blatant Iranian aggressions against neighboring countries. He described these actions as a natural outcome of Iran’s strategy to export chaos and destabilize both regional and international stability.
President Alimi asserted that the ongoing situation reinforces the international community’s understanding of Iran’s destructive role and its rogue militias. He stated that the stability of Yemen, the region, and global maritime routes depends on ending the Houthi coup and restoring state institutions, thereby re-establishing the Yemeni government’s authority over its territory.
In light of recent developments, President Alimi outlined the government’s recent measures to address political, economic, military, and security challenges. He mentioned the approval of the government program and the state budget, alongside ongoing comprehensive reform initiatives. He commended Saudi Arabia’s leadership role in supporting Yemen’s economy and alleviating the suffering of its people, aiming for their aspirations for security, stability, and peace.
The meeting concluded with the presence of Dr. Yahya Al-Shaibi, Director of the Presidential Office, highlighting the collaborative efforts between Yemen and the UK to foster peace and stability in the region.
