Recent government data reveals a concerning increase in heat-related illnesses and fatalities in South Korea, particularly during late summer. Over the past decade, these cases have nearly tripled, highlighting a growing public health crisis.
A study conducted by a government research institute under the Ministry of Interior utilized data from the Korea Disease Control Agency. The analysis found that the annual average of heat-related cases stood at 215 from 2011 to 2015. This data specifically covers the period from Ipchu (August 7) to the end of the month, according to the traditional Korean calendar.
From 2016 to 2020, the annual average surged to 658 cases. The trend continued with an average of 638 cases reported between 2021 and 2025. These figures clearly indicate a persistent upward trajectory in the impact of heatwaves on public health.
The mortality rate associated with heat-related illnesses has also seen a significant increase. Between 2012 and 2015, the average stood at 3.3 deaths annually. However, this number rose to over 4 deaths per year during the last decade. Notably, the year 2024 alone recorded 12 fatalities linked to heat-related conditions.
As South Korea continues to experience heatwaves, temperatures are expected to remain high until late August. Daily maximum temperatures are projected to range between 31 and 35 degrees Celsius across the country. This prolonged heat poses serious risks to public health, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and preventive measures.
The alarming rise in heat-related illnesses and deaths in South Korea calls for urgent attention. As climate change continues to exacerbate these conditions, public health officials must prioritize strategies to mitigate the effects of extreme heat on vulnerable populations.
