Resida Group threatens to sell 5.79 terabytes of data from the Berlin government.

Resida Group to Auction Stolen Data from Berlin Government

The Resida Group, known for its ransomware activities, announced plans to auction 5.79 terabytes of data stolen from government agencies in Berlin. This decision follows the authorities’ refusal to pay the demanded ransom, as detailed on their website.

Stolen Data Details

Researchers believe that the Resida Group operates from Russia or Eastern Europe. The stolen data includes 46,500 contracts, emails, phone numbers, passwords, and confidential information. The group set an opening bid of 30 Bitcoin, approximately $77,000, and has implemented a countdown timer on its website for the auction.

Berlin’s Stance: No to Extortion

Berlin’s Mayor Kai Wegner and Senator for Internal Affairs Iris Spranger emphasized that the state will not succumb to extortion. They confirmed that investigations are ongoing to assess the extent of the data breach. Officials also reassured the public that the election infrastructure remains unaffected, with no breaches reported in that area.

Resida’s History of Attacks

Cybercrime tracking platforms indicate that the Resida Group has claimed responsibility for around 280 attacks since its emergence in June 2023. The group has targeted government institutions across various countries, including:

  • The British Library (2023)
  • The Chilean Army
  • Schools and healthcare facilities
  • Companies in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Italy

This group has quickly become one of the most dangerous ransomware networks, focusing on government entities and critical infrastructure worldwide.
