Minister of Information: Seizure of 800 drone fans in Al-Mahra reveals ongoing arms smuggling to Houthis with Iranian support.

Yemen's Minister of Information Highlights Threat from Houthi Drone Shipments

Yemen’s Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Muammar Al-Eryani, recently addressed a significant security concern following the interception of a large shipment of drones. Authorities at the Sarfait customs point in Al-Mahra province seized 800 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) destined for areas controlled by the Iran-backed Houthi militia. This incident underscores the militia’s ongoing efforts to enhance its military capabilities and expand its arsenal of drones, which they have frequently used to destabilize the region and threaten international shipping.

Escalating Threats to Regional Security

In a press statement, Al-Eryani emphasized that the seizure of this substantial shipment occurs during a critical period. The Houthis continue to escalate their aggressive attacks, posing a direct threat to the security of the Red Sea and international maritime routes. He pointed out that Iran provides direct support to the militia, supplying weapons and expertise in blatant violation of international resolutions. This ongoing assistance significantly boosts the Houthis’ ability to develop advanced weaponry and train fighters, thereby increasing the risk of terrorist attacks that threaten the global economy.

A Strong Message Against Smuggling

Al-Eryani noted that successfully thwarting this smuggling attempt sends a powerful message about Yemen’s commitment to countering threats to its national and regional security. It also reinforces Yemen’s position as a reliable partner in regional and international efforts to combat rising security threats, particularly in an area increasingly affected by Iranian-backed militia activities.

The Need for Enhanced Maritime and Land Surveillance

The Minister stressed that the continuous influx of advanced technologies empowers the Houthis to carry out terrorist attacks against commercial vessels, oil tankers, and critical infrastructure in the region. These targets are vital to the global economy. He emphasized that addressing these activities requires strengthening maritime and land surveillance at key entry points that could be exploited for smuggling operations. This approach aims to limit the flow of sophisticated equipment used in drone technology.

Call for International Action Against Arms Smuggling

Al-Eryani highlighted that the interception of such a large quantity of military components necessitates a more robust international response to halt arms smuggling to the Houthi militia. He urged the global community to pressure Iran to comply with international resolutions and cease supplying weapons and ammunition to the Houthis. Additionally, he called for economic and diplomatic sanctions against entities that support arms trafficking.

Strengthening Support for Yemen’s Government

The Minister appealed to the international community to intensify support for the Yemeni government in combating smuggling networks that supply the Houthi militia with weapons and military equipment. He advocated for strict oversight of maritime and land routes used for arms trafficking and the establishment of effective international coordination mechanisms to combat these operations. Al-Eryani urged the global community to fully assume its responsibilities and unite in the fight against terrorism and the Houthi threats, which jeopardize not only Yemen’s security but also the safety and stability of the entire region and the world.
