A recent official report has revealed that thousands of displaced families in Marib Governorate experienced significant hardships last year, attributed to natural disasters. The report documented a total of 36 cases of death and injury stemming from events such as floods, winds, and fires that impacted displacement camps within the region, which is known for hosting the largest concentration of displaced individuals in Yemen.
The Executive Unit for Managing Displacement Camps detailed in its annual report that Marib faced extreme climate fluctuations throughout 2025. Heavy rains and strong winds inflicted extensive damage on temporary shelters and the belongings of displaced families, severely undermining their livelihoods and stability.
The report further indicates that these adverse conditions led to the displacement of 5,161 families. Many households suffered partial or total loss of their homes, while others experienced significant losses in both food and non-food items. This worsening situation has exacerbated the already fragile humanitarian conditions within the camps.
According to the report, floods and winds resulted in the deaths of three displaced individuals and injuries to seven others. Additionally, it documented 135 fire incidents within the displacement camps during the same year. These fires, primarily attributed to overcrowding, inadequate safety standards, and the use of primitive cooking and lighting methods, resulted in four fatalities and 22 injuries, alongside substantial damage to shelters and property.
The report highlights that the displacement camps in Marib currently accommodate 558,288 displaced individuals, representing 76,476 families. Moreover, an additional 1,655,910 displaced individuals, comprising 226,587 families, reside outside the camps in surrounding areas of the governorate. This alarming situation underscores the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and improved living conditions for displaced families in Marib.
