Houthi Militia Intensifies Crackdown on Traders in Ibb

The Houthi militia continues its oppressive campaign against traders and vendors in the Mafrq Habish area, located north of Ibb city. Local sources report increasing violence and intimidation tactics employed by the militia, which has led to widespread fear among business owners.

Reports of Violence and Abduction

According to local reports, the Houthi militia has attacked several traders and vendors in the Mafrq Habish market, situated in the Al-Makhadir district of Ibb Governorate. In a disturbing turn of events, the militia has also abducted individuals who refused to pay exorbitant taxes imposed by the group. These actions coincide with the militia’s recent campaign to collect revenue as the year draws to a close, amid an unprecedented economic downturn.

Ongoing Campaign of Intimidation

This wave of violence marks an extension of the militia’s crackdown that began earlier this month. Traders and vendors have faced a series of abuses, including threats and physical assaults. The Houthi militia routinely imposes hefty financial levies on businesses in the region under various pretexts. These demands have severely hampered commercial activity, pushing many traders and vendors towards bankruptcy.

Economic Impact on Local Businesses

The continuous financial demands from the Houthi militia have created a hostile environment for trade in Ibb. As a result, many local businesses struggle to survive amidst these pressures. The combination of high taxes and a stagnant market has left traders in dire straits, raising concerns about the long-term viability of commerce in the region.

The situation in Ibb highlights the urgent need for intervention to protect local businesses and restore a sense of security for traders and vendors facing the militia’s oppressive tactics.
