The Yemeni Journalists’ Syndicate has documented a staggering 2,014 violations against journalists across various provinces over the past decade. The report highlights that the Iran-backed Houthi militia leads the list of these violations.

On Saturday, the syndicate held a press conference in Taiz, in collaboration with the International Federation of Journalists. This event coincided with World Press Freedom Day, celebrated on May 3. The conference focused on the state of press freedoms in Yemen, emphasizing the alarming statistics of violations against media professionals.

The syndicate’s report reveals a range of serious violations, including:

  • 482 cases of detention, abduction, and harassment.
  • 244 attacks on journalists and media outlets, including damage to property.
  • 223 threats and incitements against journalists, particularly women.
  • 212 instances of websites being blocked.
  • 175 cases of trials and interrogations.
  • 125 instances of salary suspensions.
  • 74 cases of torture in detention.
  • 72 instances of coverage being prohibited.
  • 55 attempts on lives.
  • 165 media outlets faced shutdowns.
  • 46 journalists were killed.
  • 79 cases of arbitrary dismissal and confiscation of work-related belongings.

During the press conference, the syndicate presented a detailed overview of the report. Emad Al-Saqaf, the head of the syndicate’s branch in Taiz, and member Zakaria Al-Kamali addressed the audience.
