In recent days, Houthi militias have launched a widespread campaign of arrests and raids in the Maawiya district of Taiz province, located in southwestern Yemen. This operation targeted teachers, doctors, students, and mosque leaders, prompting human rights organizations to label it a “systematic violation of civil and religious rights.”
Human rights sources confirm that the group has abducted approximately 13 educational and social figures. Additionally, they raided several homes and mosques under the pretext of monitoring “Quranic sessions.” Notably, the raid included the Al-Sunnah Mosque in the Al-Suwaida market, where Imam Mushir Al-Sharabi was expelled and replaced by individuals from Saada province.
Human rights activist and member of the investigative committee, Ishraq Al-Maqtari, shared details of the crackdown on the platform “X.” She noted that the arrests coincided with an increase in repression following the killing of Sheikh Hantous in Raymah. Al-Maqtari reported that the Houthis restricted movement and work, intensifying raids in Maawiya and Taiz.
According to Al-Maqtari, the following individuals have been reported as abducted:
These developments are part of a continuous wave of arrests and incursions carried out by the Houthi group in areas under their control in the provinces of Ibb and Taiz. There is widespread concern about the escalating repression and violations of religious and social freedoms, particularly against moderate and influential voices within the community.
