Prime Minister Urges Swift Preparations for International Food Security Conference in Yemen

Prime Minister Salem Saleh bin Brek has directed relevant ministries and government agencies to accelerate efforts in finalizing all technical and logistical arrangements for the upcoming International Food Security Conference in Yemen. This significant event, sponsored by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) General Secretariat, is set to take place in October.

Emphasizing Transparency and Sustainable Solutions

During a preparatory meeting on Thursday, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of clearly and transparently presenting the challenges the government faces. He called for sustainable solutions to address Yemen’s food security gap. The conference aims to provide a collaborative platform for long-term humanitarian and developmental partnerships, focusing on addressing food insecurity and enhancing interventions in related sectors.

Acknowledging GCC Support

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the support from GCC member states in hosting the conference. He highlighted their commitment to addressing food security issues in Yemen, particularly amid the escalating challenges posed by the war instigated by Houthi militias. This conflict has resulted in devastating humanitarian and economic repercussions. The conference represents a crucial opportunity to strengthen cooperation with regional and international partners, creating a practical roadmap to tackle food security challenges through sustainable programs and development initiatives.

Comprehensive Vision for Food Security

The Prime Minister called for a comprehensive and integrated vision, urging coordination among all ministries and relevant entities. This vision should include proposed mechanisms to enhance food security as part of a broader plan focused on increasing funding and investment in the agricultural and fisheries sectors. Additionally, it should support agricultural production and export, while building the capacities of institutions involved in food security. He emphasized the need for active participation from the national private sector, commercial chambers, and business leaders at the conference.

Coordination and Expected Outcomes

Leaders from the Ministries of Planning and International Cooperation, Agriculture, and Fisheries, along with the Yemeni Embassy in Saudi Arabia, provided a comprehensive briefing during the meeting. They discussed the arrangements for the conference and ongoing coordination with the GCC General Secretariat. They outlined key discussion topics and anticipated outcomes, ensuring that the conference serves as a unifying platform for the government and regional and international partners. The goal is to enhance collaborative efforts and transition from emergency interventions to sustainable development projects that achieve lasting food security.
