A rights report documents over 40,000 violations against women by Houthi militias over the past decade.

Over 40,000 Violations Against Yemeni Women Documented

The Yemeni Women Empowerment Foundation (YWEF) has reported alarming statistics regarding the treatment of women in Yemen. Over the past decade, Houthi militias, backed by the Iranian regime, have committed more than 40,000 violations against women across various provinces.

Types of Violations

The foundation’s report details a range of abuses, including:

  • 1,901 cases of abduction and detention of women and girls, involving enforced disappearances, torture, and inhumane treatment.
  • 2,940 additional arrests, with 39 cases resulting in sentences that included death, imprisonment, confiscation of property, and financial penalties.
  • 2,720 killings attributed to indiscriminate shelling and heavy weaponry.
  • 375 injuries from direct sniper fire.
  • 605 women affected by landmines and improvised explosive devices planted indiscriminately by the militias.

Domestic Violence and Displacement

The report also highlights 169 documented cases of killings of female relatives up to the fourth degree, reflecting a pattern of ideologically driven domestic violence. Additionally, it recorded 42 cases of rape occurring in detention facilities or during raids and displacement. Approximately 4 million people have been displaced, with women making up nearly half of this population. Furthermore, 9.6 million women and girls face hunger and lack of services due to policies of starvation and blockade.

Employment Violations

According to the report, 16,451 women experienced arbitrary dismissal from public jobs. Additionally, 14,800 cases of job replacement occurred, where female employees were replaced by individuals loyal to the militias. The foundation emphasizes that these figures represent only a fraction of the actual violations, as access to many areas remains challenging.

Call for International Action

YWEF has urged the United Nations and the international community to establish an independent international investigation mechanism into the crimes committed against women. The foundation calls for sanctions against Houthi leaders involved in these violations, as well as measures to protect women and girls. They advocate for lifting restrictions on mobility and employment, supporting empowerment programs, and providing psychological and legal assistance to victims.

Commitment to Justice

The foundation reaffirmed its commitment to documenting violations, uncovering the truth, and advocating for women’s rights until justice is achieved in all its forms.
