Zekaria Al-Jabri, the son of educator Dr. Abdu Yahya Al-Jabri, has shed light on the profound suffering his family endures due to his father’s ongoing kidnapping by Houthi militias in Ibb Governorate. Dr. Al-Jabri has been held captive for over a year without any legal proceedings or fair trial.
Zekaria reported that his father was detained on June 12, 2022, at the Political Security headquarters in Ibb. Since that day, Dr. Al-Jabri has spent 365 days behind bars without a clear legal path to safeguard his fundamental rights. The family has only received three phone calls from him throughout the year, and they did not have their first family visit until eleven and a half months after his detention.
The repercussions of the kidnapping extend beyond Dr. Al-Jabri, affecting the entire family. They have endured a year filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and psychological, social, and economic distress. The lack of clear information regarding the fate or legal status of Dr. Al-Jabri exacerbates their suffering. Zekaria emphasized that the ongoing detention without a fair trial and the strict limitations on family communication represent a blatant violation of the fundamental rights protected by international conventions.
Zekaria has called for the immediate release of his father or, at the very least, for him to be presented in a public trial that ensures his legal rights. He stressed the importance of allowing regular communication between Dr. Al-Jabri and his family without arbitrary restrictions. The doctor suffers from spinal issues and had previously undergone a spinal fusion surgery. He required another operation before his kidnapping, raising serious concerns about his health condition while imprisoned.
It is worth noting that the Houthi militias launched a widespread kidnapping campaign in Ibb in early June, targeting over 100 individuals, including prominent figures from various sectors. To date, the militias have refused to release these individuals or to file any charges against them.
