On Saturday, North Korea criticized the United States for approving a nearly $300 million sale of advanced air-to-air missiles and military equipment to South Korea. The North warned that this decision would escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
The Director-General of Foreign Policy at North Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement through the Korean Central News Agency. He noted that military cooperation between Washington and Seoul is “systematically strengthening,” despite growing international concerns about rising tensions in the region.
He emphasized that “U.S. arms exports are military exports,” asserting that Pyongyang will continue to bolster its self-defense capabilities to maintain a balance of power.
North Korea has consistently criticized the military collaboration between the U.S. and South Korea, labeling it as preparation for war. In this context, South Korea’s Ministry of Defense announced that officials from both countries recently met in Seoul to discuss enhancing nuclear deterrence and military readiness.
This meeting occurred amid increasing fears regarding North Korea’s expanding capabilities to produce nuclear materials suitable for weaponry. Recent images of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspecting a new nuclear facility have heightened international concerns.
In related news, Beijing announced that Myanmar’s President Min Aung Hlaing will visit China from June 15 to 19. During this visit, he will engage in discussions with President Xi Jinping and other senior officials. This meeting underscores the close ties between the two nations, despite Myanmar’s international isolation following the 2021 coup.
