14 displaced die, injured and over 7,000 shelters damaged in Marib due to heavy rains.

Heavy Rains in Marib Cause Fatalities and Displace Thousands

In a distressing turn of events, Marib province has been hit by severe weather conditions, resulting in the death and injury of displaced individuals and extensive damage to shelters. The Executive Unit for the Management of Displaced Persons’ Camps in Marib released preliminary statistics on Sunday evening, highlighting the scale of the devastation caused by the heavy rainfall.

Casualties and Injuries Among the Displaced

According to the initial report, which the Yemeni News Agency (SABA) obtained, the intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds claimed the lives of four displaced people. Additionally, ten others, including children and women, suffered injuries. The sudden and severe weather has brought to light the vulnerability of the displaced populations residing in the camps.

Widespread Damage to Shelters

The report further detailed that the floods triggered by the downpour significantly impacted the displaced persons’ camps. A staggering 7,179 displaced families have suffered damage to their shelters. Of these, 2,973 shelters were completely destroyed, while 4,206 sustained partial damage across several camps in the province. The Executive Unit has urgently called on its partners to provide immediate relief in the form of shelter and food supplies. There is also a pressing need for support in protecting the displaced and their camps from further natural disasters, including rains, floods, and storms.

An Urgent Call for Aid

The situation in Marib underscores the dire circumstances faced by displaced populations, particularly during natural disasters. The Executive Unit’s appeal for rapid assistance highlights the critical need for shelter, food, and protective measures against the elements. As the community grapples with the aftermath of the severe weather, the call for aid resonates with a sense of urgency to mitigate the suffering of those affected.

The tragic events in Marib serve as a stark reminder of the challenges displaced populations endure and the importance of timely support and intervention from humanitarian partners.
