Yemeni Political Leaders Engage with EU Officials in Brussels

In Brussels, a group of Yemeni political leaders held discussions with European Union (EU) officials to address recent developments in both national and regional contexts. The meetings aimed to enhance the relationship between Yemen and Europe.

Extensive Consultations with EU Bodies

The consultations included extensive meetings with the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, the EU’s Directorate for International Partnerships, and the Middle East Working Group within the Council of the European Union. Additionally, the Yemeni delegation met with the European External Action Service’s Yemen Affairs Division.

EU’s Support for Yemen’s Legitimacy

European officials reiterated their support for Yemen’s legitimate government, emphasizing the importance of political cohesion. They firmly rejected the Houthi militia’s actions that threaten international maritime navigation. This stance reflects the EU’s commitment to maintaining stability in the region.

Yemeni Leaders Call for Enhanced Cooperation

Yemeni leaders underscored the need to develop bilateral relations beyond humanitarian and diplomatic levels, advocating for a shift towards geopolitical and developmental cooperation. They highlighted the urgency of adapting to the evolving regional circumstances.

Shared Principles and Common Interests

The Yemeni delegation pointed out that the relationship between the EU and Yemen’s legitimate government extends beyond mutual interests. It also encompasses shared principles related to democracy and pluralism. They stressed the necessity of coordinating efforts to mitigate the threats posed by the Houthi militia and to address its violations against the Yemeni people.

Notable Members of the Yemeni Delegation

The Yemeni delegation included prominent figures such as Abdul Razak al-Hajari, a member of the Supreme Committee of the Yemeni Islah Party and head of its parliamentary bloc; Abdul Rahman al-Suqaf, Secretary-General of the Yemeni Socialist Party; Abdullah Naaman, Secretary-General of the Popular Nasserist Organization; Abdullah Abu Huriah, Assistant Secretary-General of the National Resistance Political Bureau; and Abdul Wahab Maawda, head of the parliamentary bloc of the General People’s Congress.
