Yemen Participates in the Annual ISO Meeting in Cartagena, Colombia

Global Standards Development Focus

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) concluded its annual meeting in Cartagena, Colombia, today, with significant participation from the Republic of Yemen. The Yemeni delegation, led by the CEO of the Yemeni Standards and Metrology Organization and member of the ISO General Assembly, Engineer Hadeed Al-Maas, engaged in the event aimed at enhancing global standards.

The meeting, attended by representatives from over 160 countries, focused on developing and utilizing international standard specifications to support standards and development efforts in emerging economies. Discussions aimed to improve the quality of life and ensure the safety and efficiency of products, systems, and services. Moreover, the role of standards in achieving sustainable development and mitigating the effects of climate change was a key agenda item.

Yemen’s Active Participation

Yemen took part in several pivotal meetings, including the heads of delegations meeting, the general session, and workshops dedicated to supporting developing countries in standardization and capacity building. Dialogues on standardization activities in the digital age, meetings for new CEOs of standardization bodies of member states, and the ISO General Assembly meeting were among the key engagements.

Launching a New Guide for Sustainable Development Goals

A highlight of the General Assembly meeting was the launch of a new guide by ISO and the United Nations. This guide aims to support businesses and organizations in aligning their strategies with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), fostering a greater contribution to these global objectives.

Outcomes and Recommendations

The meeting concluded with several recommendations, emphasizing the importance of supporting standard development efforts in emerging economies. It called for activating the role of member states in standardization activities and enhancing the role of standards in sustainable development, energy conservation, environmental protection, and climate change mitigation.

Bilateral Meetings on the Sidelines

On the sidelines of the meeting, Engineer Hadeed Al-Maas held discussions with key ISO figures, including ISO President Sung Hwan Cho, Secretary-General Sergio Mujica, and the regional coordinator for Africa and Arab countries, Collins Wafula. These meetings focused on enhancing partnership with ISO, benefiting from ISO’s standards and capacity-building programs, active participation in technical and coordination committees, and discussions on upgrading Yemen’s membership to a full member by the beginning of 2025.

This annual ISO meeting marks a significant step towards global collaboration in standardization, with Yemen’s active participation highlighting its commitment to international standards and sustainable development.
