Water and Environment Minister meets UNHCR office director in Aden for refugee affairs discussion.

Aden, Yemen – In a significant meeting held in the temporary capital, Aden, Yemen’s Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, met with the Director of the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) office in Aden, Mohammed Rafiq. The discussion focused on several critical issues, including donor commitments to developing countries in education, health, environmental sustainability, climate change, and social protection.

Exploring Donor Commitments and Environmental Solutions

The meeting delved into the commitments of donor nations to developing countries, a topic of paramount importance discussed at the Global Refugee Forum. This forum, which convenes every four years in Geneva, brings together donors, the private sector, countries, and governments to address various challenges. The discussions aimed at enhancing collaboration and support for developing nations, including Yemen, in critical areas such as education, health, and environmental protection.

Additionally, the two parties discussed innovative solutions proposed by the UNHCR, particularly focusing on the recycling of expired soap. They explored safe recycling methods that comply with environmental standards, including the potential re-exportation of recycled products. This initiative is part of broader efforts to address environmental challenges and promote sustainability.

Upcoming Workshop and Future Strategies

A significant part of the conversation was dedicated to the preparations for an extensive workshop scheduled for September 27 in Aden. This event aims to assess the needs of various sectors to inform Yemen’s four-year strategic plan. The strategy seeks to secure funding from donors and the private sector to enhance Yemen’s capacity to address migration and displacement challenges.

Prioritizing Water and Sanitation Services

Minister Al-Sharjabi emphasized the ministry’s commitment to prioritizing water and sanitation services in the upcoming projects and programs. Recognizing the urgent needs of refugees, displaced individuals, and host communities, the ministry aims to ensure that these critical services are at the forefront of their efforts.
