Warnings of a global food price surge lasting until 2027 due to supply and shipping disruptions.

Global Food Price Surge Expected to Last Until 2027

Experts from international organizations have warned of a new wave of rising food prices worldwide, potentially lasting until 2027. This surge is driven by global supply chain disruptions, high shipping costs, droughts linked to the El NiƱo phenomenon, and the impacts of international conflicts on grain and energy markets.

Rising Prices of Essential Food Items

International reports indicate a significant increase in the prices of several staple food items across various countries. In Indonesia, rice prices have reached record levels, while in Egypt, bread prices have surged by approximately 25 percent. Additionally, sugar prices in India have hit unprecedented levels due to a decline in production.

Global Food System Under Pressure

Maximo Torero, the Chief Economist at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, stated that pressures on the global food system are likely to escalate in the coming months. He anticipates that these effects will persist into the next year.

Inflation Outpacing General Price Levels

Data from the World Bank reveals that food prices have outstripped general inflation rates in 22 percent of the 150 countries analyzed during the quarter ending in September. The FAO Food Price Index reached 136 points, marking its highest level since November 2022.

Supply Chain Disruptions and Climate Change Effects

Reports highlight that attacks on grain infrastructure in the Black Sea and security disruptions in the Red Sea have contributed to increased transportation and shipping costs. Furthermore, climate change and poor rainfall seasons have led to decreased agricultural production in several producing countries.

Significant Increases in Crop Prices

Wheat prices have risen by more than 30 percent this year, alongside increases in rice prices in several Asian exporting countries. Meanwhile, the costs of fertilizers and energy continue to exert pressure on agricultural production and food industries.

Concerns for Low and Middle-Income Countries

Experts believe that the continuation of these factors may trigger a new wave of global food inflation. There are growing concerns about the impact on low- and middle-income countries, where food constitutes a significant portion of household spending.
