UN Report Highlights Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen

A recent report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) underscores the severe impact of heavy rains and flooding in Yemen. Since late March, these adverse weather conditions have led to the deaths and injuries of 112 individuals, while tens of thousands more have faced significant damage to their homes and livelihoods.

Impact of Flooding on Communities

According to the report, as of April 26, the flooding has resulted in 28 fatalities and 84 injuries, with women and children among those affected. Coastal, urban, and rural regions in southern, western, and eastern Yemen have endured substantial consequences, severely disrupting daily life for local communities.

Most Affected Provinces

The findings indicate that Taiz province has been hit the hardest, with approximately 9,790 families impacted. Following Taiz, the provinces of Aden, Abyan, and Lahij reported damages affecting 1,361 families. Additionally, families in Marib, Al-Jawf, Hadramout, and Shabwa have also experienced significant impacts, with 1,231, 500, 364, and 356 families affected, respectively. Reports from Al-Khawkhah and Hays in Al-Hudaydah province further illustrate the widespread destruction caused by the flooding.

Losses and Damages

The report estimates that around 14,375 families, or approximately 100,625 individuals, have been affected, primarily consisting of internally displaced persons and vulnerable host communities. The flooding has caused extensive damage to:

  • Shelters and housing
  • Livelihoods
  • Food supplies
  • Roads and water sanitation networks

Furthermore, the report confirms that emergency assistance has reached 4,319 families through the Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM), demonstrating ongoing efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the region.
