In a tragic incident in the city of Hodeidah, two children sustained serious injuries due to a landmine explosion, remnants of the Houthi militia’s terrorism. Local sources reported that the children were playing in rainwater in the Abu Halfa area on Sunday when they encountered the explosive device.
Earlier this month, the Yemeni Mine Observatory revealed that the heavy rains hitting several Yemeni provinces have swept mines and explosive warheads from contaminated areas to populated regions. This alarming development poses a significant risk to residents, especially in areas near displacement camps and residential villages.
The Observatory has issued a warning to farmers, herders, residents, and all citizens to exercise extreme caution regarding mines and ammunition carried by floodwaters into populated areas. It stressed the importance of reporting any suspicious objects and educating children about the dangers these objects pose to their safety.
Moreover, travelers on main, secondary, and alternative roads between provinces are urged to remain vigilant of the mine and warhead hazards that floods have brought to these pathways. The emphasis is on ensuring their safety amidst these hidden dangers.
This incident underscores the ongoing threat of landmines in Yemen, remnants of conflict, highlighting the urgent need for mine clearance and awareness efforts to protect civilians, especially in flood-prone seasons.
