The 6th World Conference of Parliamentary Speakers concluded in Geneva, featuring participation from the Speaker of the House.

Yemeni Parliament Delegation Concludes Participation in Global Parliamentary Conference

The Yemeni parliamentary delegation, led by Speaker Sheikh Sultan al-Barakani, has wrapped up its participation in the Sixth Global Conference of Presidents of Parliaments. This event, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in collaboration with the United Nations, took place in Geneva, Switzerland. The conference focused on the theme “A Troubled World: Parliamentary Cooperation and Pluralism for Peace, Justice, and Prosperity for All.”

Speaker’s Remarks on the Final Statement

During the closing session, Speaker al-Barakani expressed his disappointment regarding the final statement issued by the conference. He noted the absence of references to critical issues such as Palestine, Gaza, and ongoing conflicts in various countries. Al-Barakani emphasized that ignoring these matters suggests a disregard for human life, stating, “Our moral responsibility, the principles of the United Nations, international law, justice, and human rights have been stripped from this statement.”

Urgent Call for Action

Al-Barakani urged the conference leadership and participants not to overlook the plight of people suffering from violence and starvation. He painted a grim picture of the situation, where citizens face extreme deprivation, with no access to food, water, or medical supplies. “Is it reasonable that the world’s parliamentary leaders gather in this hall and issue a statement that shows no concern for human blood or the atrocities occurring in Gaza?” he questioned. He labeled this oversight as a “stain on humanity” and called for a collective conscience among leaders.

Emphasis on Humanitarian Needs

The Speaker reiterated the necessity of including topics such as halting the war and providing essential supplies like food and medicine in the conference’s final declaration. He pointed out that the resolution of the Palestinian issue has been acknowledged in previous meetings, questioning why it was ignored in this gathering. “What is happening in Palestine is heartbreaking and ignites deep emotions,” he remarked.

Collaborative Efforts for Global Security

The closing session featured discussions among members of the Yemeni Parliament, including Abdul Rahman Maazib, Ahmed Bahawirth, and Khaled Al-Rudfani. They focused on enhancing the role of parliaments in global cooperation and fostering dialogue among participating nations. The aim was to identify priorities and collective actions regarding the issues on the conference agenda.

Participants emphasized that security should not be viewed solely through a military lens. They advocated for a broader approach that addresses the root causes of insecurity. The group concluded that global challenges necessitate coordinated responses and solidarity among nations.

Conclusion

The Sixth Global Conference of Presidents of Parliaments highlighted the urgent need for parliamentary cooperation to address pressing global issues. The Yemeni delegation’s strong stance on humanitarian concerns underscores the importance of prioritizing human rights and justice in international discourse.
