On Friday, three fishermen from the same family lost their lives due to an underwater mine explosion near the shores of Kamaran Island in the Al Hudaydah Governorate. The fishermen were on their way to work when the incident occurred, highlighting the ongoing dangers posed by remnants of war in the region.
The victims, identified as Naeem Abdu Doum, Aslam Abdu Doum, and Issa Bousaily, died as a result of a mine planted by the Iran-backed Houthi militia. Walid Al-Qudaimi, the Deputy Governor of Al Hudaydah, confirmed the tragic event and emphasized that it reflects a pattern of ongoing violence against civilians. He noted that such incidents continue to claim innocent lives along Yemen’s coast.
Al-Qudaimi stressed that these crimes will not go unpunished. He asserted that those responsible, including the Iranian proxies, will face accountability for their actions against the Yemeni people. He urged the international community to take action to halt these violations and protect civilians.
The Yemeni Mine Observatory has previously reported that the Houthi militia has deployed internationally banned sea mines along Yemen’s western coastline, stretching from Bab al-Mandab in the south to Midi in the north. This dangerous practice has resulted in numerous casualties among fishermen and has severely disrupted marine production in extensive areas.
The loss of these three fishermen underscores the urgent need for international intervention to address the ongoing threats posed by landmines and to protect the lives of civilians in Yemen. As the situation continues to evolve, the call for accountability and action remains critical for the safety of the Yemeni people.
