Meeting Between Yemeni Parliament Speaker and U.S. Ambassador Addresses Key National Issues

Discussion on Peace and Regional Developments

On Tuesday, Sheikh Sultan al-Barakani, the Speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, met with Stephen Fagin, the U.S. Ambassador to Yemen. The two officials discussed several pressing issues affecting the nation, including peace initiatives, regional developments, and areas of mutual interest.

During the meeting, al-Barakani highlighted the significant challenges Yemen faces due to the actions of the Iran-backed Houthi militias. He condemned their crimes against the Yemeni people, including violations of civilian rights and threats to regional and international security. Al-Barakani emphasized that the Houthis have consistently undermined peace efforts and international agreements, asserting that they cannot be considered genuine partners in the peace process. He reaffirmed the need for a peace framework based on three key references and stressed the importance of justice, democracy, and human rights.

Call for International Support

The Speaker urged both allies and friends to support the Yemeni government in overcoming various challenges, particularly in the economic sector. He underscored the necessity of stabilizing the currency to improve citizens’ living standards and ensure access to essential services. Al-Barakani called on the United States to play an active role in achieving peace and to support the legitimate government in addressing economic challenges. He also urged a firm stance against the Houthi militias, which pose a threat to the future of Yemen and the broader region.

Condemnation of Violence in the Region

The meeting also addressed the ongoing violence in the region, particularly the Israeli military actions against the Palestinian and Lebanese people. Al-Barakani reiterated Yemen’s condemnation of the Israeli occupation’s brutal acts against civilians in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon, highlighting the catastrophic implications for international peace and security.

U.S. Commitment to Yemen’s Stability

In response, Ambassador Fagin reaffirmed the U.S. administration’s support for Yemen and its constitutional legitimacy. He expressed the United States’ commitment to fostering stability in the region and reiterated support for Yemen across various sectors. The ambassador voiced hope for a just and comprehensive peace in Yemen, allowing the nation to achieve security and stability.

Fagin also condemned the Houthi actions against the Yemeni people, describing their behavior as unacceptable and harmful. He assured that the U.S. position on maintaining Yemen’s security, stability, and unity remains steadfast, receiving high-level attention within the U.S. administration.

The meeting concluded with the presence of several members of the Yemeni Parliament, including Mohammed al-Hamiri, Ensaf Mayo, and Mufaddal al-Ibara. The discussions highlighted the urgent need for collaborative efforts to address Yemen’s challenges and work toward a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
