The Republic of Yemen has urged Iran to cease its destabilizing activities in Yemen and the broader region. This call comes in response to Iran’s ongoing support for the Houthi militia, which poses a significant threat to Yemen’s sovereignty. Yemen emphasizes the need for international support to protect its territory and enforce existing arms embargoes against the Houthis.
Heitham Shuja’ al-Din, Yemen’s ambassador and permanent representative in Vienna, highlighted the necessity of taking concrete steps to bolster the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government. He stressed that restoring state authority is crucial for safeguarding maritime navigation in the Red Sea and other waterways. This action aims to prevent the Houthi militia from continuing its threats against international maritime security.
In his address at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) meetings in Vienna, Ambassador Shuja’ al-Din stated, "It is essential to move towards a binding new agreement with Iran." He insisted that any agreement must address all concerns related to Iran’s nuclear program, its ballistic missile initiatives, and its interventions in regional affairs, particularly in Yemen.
Notably, the IAEA Board of Governors adopted a resolution on Thursday, presented by the United States, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. This resolution condemns Iran’s failure to comply with its nuclear obligations, serving as a renewed warning for Iran to adhere to its commitments.
The resolution calls on Iran to urgently rectify its non-compliance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
Yemen’s appeal for international support underscores the urgent need for a coordinated response to Iranian influence in the region. As the situation evolves, the international community must remain vigilant in addressing these challenges to ensure stability and security in Yemen and beyond.
