Discussion on Peace and Regional Developments
On Tuesday, Sheikh Sultan al-Barakani, the Speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, met with Stephen Fagin, the U.S. Ambassador to Yemen. The two officials discussed several pressing issues affecting the nation, including peace initiatives, regional developments, and areas of mutual interest.
During the meeting, al-Barakani highlighted the significant challenges Yemen faces due to the actions of the Iran-backed Houthi militias. He condemned their crimes against the Yemeni people, including violations of civilian rights and threats to regional and international security. Al-Barakani emphasized that the Houthis have consistently undermined peace efforts and international agreements, asserting that they cannot be considered genuine partners in the peace process. He reaffirmed the need for a peace framework based on three key references and stressed the importance of justice, democracy, and human rights.
Call for International Support
The Speaker urged both allies and friends to support the Yemeni government in overcoming various challenges, particularly in the economic sector. He underscored the necessity of stabilizing the currency to improve citizens’ living standards and ensure access to essential services. Al-Barakani called on the United States to play an active role in achieving peace and to support the legitimate government in addressing economic challenges. He also urged a firm stance against the Houthi militias, which pose a threat to the future of Yemen and the broader region.
Condemnation of Violence in the Region
The meeting also addressed the ongoing violence in the region, particularly the Israeli military actions against the Palestinian and Lebanese people. Al-Barakani reiterated Yemen’s condemnation of the Israeli occupation’s brutal acts against civilians in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon, highlighting the catastrophic implications for international peace and security.
U.S. Commitment to Yemen’s Stability
In response, Ambassador Fagin reaffirmed the U.S. administration’s support for Yemen and its constitutional legitimacy. He expressed the United States’ commitment to fostering stability in the region and reiterated support for Yemen across various sectors.
