Speaker of Parliament Discusses Yemen’s Current Situation with U.S. Charge d’Affaires

Today, Sheikh Sultan al-Barakani, the Speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, held a virtual meeting with Jonathan Pecha, the U.S. Charge d’Affaires in Yemen. They discussed the latest developments in Yemen’s political, economic, security, and humanitarian landscapes.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

During the meeting, both officials explored ways to enhance cooperation between Yemen and the United States. They addressed the ongoing economic crisis and its severe impact on the humanitarian situation. Al-Barakani emphasized the urgent need for regional and international support to alleviate the suffering of Yemeni citizens. He called for backing developmental projects and strengthening the capabilities of financial and service institutions.

Addressing Humanitarian Challenges

Al-Barakani highlighted the dire conditions faced by Yemenis, particularly the lack of essential services. He pointed out the frequent power outages in Aden and the worsening water crisis in Taiz. Additionally, he noted the continuous depreciation of the Yemeni rial. The Speaker stated that the Yemeni people endure two major challenges: the systematic crimes committed by the Houthi militia and the unprecedented economic and humanitarian crisis.

Importance of Legislative Action

The Speaker underscored the significance of convening the Parliament to exercise its legislative and oversight powers. He stressed the need to activate the role of state institutions to combat corruption and enhance accountability. Al-Barakani also highlighted the importance of parliamentary committees conducting field visits to connect with citizens and ensure the provision of services while safeguarding public funds and national wealth.

Call for Genuine Solutions to Achieve Peace

Al-Barakani asserted that achieving peace in Yemen requires real solutions and fundamental reforms. He urged adherence to agreed-upon political references at local, regional, and international levels to resolve the crisis and address its political, economic, social, and humanitarian repercussions. He called on the United States to play an active role in achieving peace and to take a firm stance against the Houthi militia’s terrorism, which threatens regional and global stability. He referenced a recent failed attempt to smuggle large quantities of Iranian weapons to the Houthi militia, which were intercepted by the National Resistance led by Brigadier General Tariq Saleh.

U.S. Commitment to Yemen’s Stability

In response, Jonathan Pecha reaffirmed the United States’ support for Yemen’s constitutional legitimacy. He expressed the U.S. commitment to restoring security and stability in Yemen, preserving its unity, and ending the ongoing crisis. Pecha noted that these issues receive high-level attention within the U.S. administration. He also mentioned that Washington closely monitors developments on the ground and collaborates with regional and international partners to alleviate humanitarian suffering and build a fair and lasting peace in Yemen.
