The Prime Minister received the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization in Aden.

Yemeni Prime Minister Hosts International Maritime Organization Secretary-General

On Wednesday, Yemeni Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak welcomed Arsenio Dominguez, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), along with his accompanying delegation. This marks Dominguez’s first visit to Yemen, aimed at assessing the impact of Houthi terrorist attacks on international shipping.

Discussion on Maritime Security

During the meeting, the two leaders reviewed the security situation in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. They focused on the threats posed by Houthi attacks on commercial vessels and international navigation. The discussions highlighted the need for enhanced cooperation between Yemen, the IMO, and its member states to improve coordination and bolster the capabilities of Yemen’s maritime security agencies.

Addressing Recent Developments

Prime Minister bin Mubarak addressed the recent developments in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, particularly the piracy supported by Iran, which has disrupted navigation in this vital maritime corridor. He pointed out the humanitarian and environmental disasters resulting from these actions, including the ongoing detention of the Galaxy Leader ship and its crew. Bin Mubarak emphasized the responsibility of the IMO and its member states to support the Yemeni government in regaining control over its coastlines, thereby ensuring the security of the Red Sea, which is a national, regional, and international priority.

Strengthening Partnerships

The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for Dominguez’s visit and the potential outcomes that could strengthen the partnership between Yemen and the IMO. He reiterated Yemen’s commitment to implementing the international agreements and treaties it has joined within the IMO framework. Additionally, he announced plans to establish a National Maritime Security Committee to address these pressing issues.

IMO’s Commitment to Maritime Safety

In response, Secretary-General Dominguez reaffirmed that protecting maritime navigation remains a top priority for the IMO. He acknowledged the importance of preventing further deterioration of maritime security in this crucial region. Dominguez committed to supporting the Yemeni government and coordinating efforts to ensure maritime safety while urging member states to enhance their capabilities in this area.

Key Attendees

The meeting also included the presence of Dr. Abdul Salam Hamid, the Minister of Transport, who contributed to the discussions on enhancing maritime security in Yemen.

This meeting underscores the critical nature of international cooperation in safeguarding maritime routes, particularly in regions facing security challenges.
