Minister of Planning Discusses Development Partnership with UNFPA in Yemen

In a significant meeting held today in the temporary capital of Aden, Dr. Afrah Al-Zuba, Yemen’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, engaged with Francesco Galiteri, the UNFPA representative in Yemen. The discussion focused on enhancing collaborative efforts and developing programs aimed at improving demographic data, capacity building, and supporting vital sectors.

Importance of Data in National Policy Making

During the meeting, Minister Al-Zuba emphasized that the Ministry of Planning serves as the primary coordinating body for development and international cooperation in Yemen. She highlighted the critical role of reliable data and statistics in formulating national policies and plans, especially given the current challenges facing the country. Al-Zuba praised the UNFPA’s efforts in supporting population programs and statistical surveys, which contribute to better planning and decision-making.

Comprehensive National Development Plan

The Minister outlined the ministry’s direction towards creating a comprehensive national development plan, the first of its kind in years. This plan will incorporate best international practices and aim to enhance coordination among various sectors. Al-Zuba called for strengthened institutional integration with the Central Statistical Organization to ensure the availability of accurate and updated data, which is essential for evidence-based policy development.

International Support and Sustainable Development Goals

Dr. Al-Zuba also stressed the importance of international partners, particularly the UNFPA, in this endeavor. She noted that their support would enhance planning and implementation capabilities, ultimately helping to achieve sustainable development goals. Additionally, she emphasized the need to bolster the roles of academic and health institutions in building capacities and delivering essential services.

UNFPA’s Commitment to Yemen

In response, Francesco Galiteri reaffirmed the UNFPA’s commitment to supporting the Yemeni government. He expressed the organization’s dedication to strengthening its partnership with the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation. This collaboration aims to implement priority programs, particularly in the areas of population, reproductive health, and youth empowerment.

This meeting marks a crucial step towards fostering a robust partnership that can effectively address Yemen’s developmental challenges and enhance the well-being of its citizens.
