On Monday, Prime Minister Dr. Sha’if Mohsen Al-Zandani welcomed Hodeidah Governor Al-Hassan Taher in the temporary capital of Aden. The meeting focused on the latest developments in Hodeidah following the extensive military escalation by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia. This escalation has led to serious field developments and significant humanitarian repercussions for civilians.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Al-Zandani listened to a briefing on the field and humanitarian conditions in Hodeidah. The governor reported an increasing wave of displacement from areas overrun by the Houthi militia. He highlighted the militia’s violations, including the killing and abduction of civilians, as well as the dire circumstances faced by families forced to abandon their homes and possessions due to bombardments and assaults. The governor also discussed the urgent needs of the displaced and the efforts made by local authorities in coordination with governmental bodies and regional and international partners.
Dr. Al-Zandani emphasized that the battle to restore full state authority does not end with changes in front lines. He stated that Yemenis currently resisting the Iranian-backed Houthi project are engaged in a defense of the republic, sovereignty, and the future of the country. He assured that the state and government would continue to work on rebuilding strength and capacity to regain initiative, aiming to end the coup and restore state authority and its institutions in Hodeidah and across the nation.
The Prime Minister noted that the situation on the western coast mirrors the Houthi militia’s pattern of subjugating local communities through murder, repression, displacement, and property confiscation. He affirmed that these crimes would not be forgotten over time, and the government would document all violations in preparation for holding the perpetrators accountable.
Dr. Al-Zandani directed efforts to intensify in receiving displaced individuals and securing their basic needs. He praised the local authorities in the provinces and areas hosting the displaced. He stressed the necessity of treating the waves of displacement as a national mission requiring a broad governmental and humanitarian response, along with urgent international support. He urged that host communities and the displaced should not be left to face the consequences of the escalation alone.
