The Foreign Minister discusses enhancing maritime security cooperation and capacity building with her Japanese counterpart.

Yemeni Foreign Minister Discusses Maritime Security Cooperation with Japan

Yemeni Foreign Minister Dr. Afrah Al-Zouba held a phone conversation today with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. The discussion focused on enhancing cooperation between the two friendly nations, the latest developments in Yemen, and the implications of Houthi escalation on the security of the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab, and international navigation.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

During the call, both ministers addressed various aspects of bilateral cooperation and ways to develop it further. They particularly emphasized maritime security, capacity building, humanitarian support, and developmental assistance. Additionally, they reviewed regional developments and issues of mutual interest.

Houthi Escalation and Regional Security

Dr. Al-Zouba informed her Japanese counterpart about the recent Houthi terrorist escalation in the western coast, Bab al-Mandab, and the Red Sea. She highlighted the consequences of these actions on Yemen’s security, the region, and international navigation. Dr. Al-Zouba reaffirmed the state’s constitutional and sovereign responsibility to protect its citizens, defend its territory, and prevent the use of Yemeni land as a platform to threaten neighboring countries and the security of the Red Sea, global trade, and energy supplies.

Japan’s Support for Yemen

The Yemeni Foreign Minister praised Japan’s supportive stance towards the Yemeni government and its condemnation of Houthi attacks. She expressed gratitude for Japan’s assistance to the Yemeni people and emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Japan, especially in maritime security and building state institutions’ capacities.

Enhancing Coast Guard Capabilities

Dr. Al-Zouba underscored the importance of supporting the capabilities of the Yemeni Coast Guard and naval forces. She called for expanding cooperation in training and maritime monitoring. She stated that the security of Bab al-Mandab and the Red Sea begins with empowering the state to protect its coasts, ports, and islands, viewing this as the most sustainable approach to safeguarding international navigation and trade. She urged intensified efforts to halt the flow of Iranian weapons and expertise to the Houthi terrorist militias.

Japan’s Firm Stance Against Houthi Attacks

In response, Minister Motegi reiterated Japan’s strong condemnation of the recent Houthi attacks, which pose a threat to regional stability and the freedom and safety of navigation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab. He emphasized Japan’s rejection of targeting civilians and civilian facilities or any actions that disrupt free and safe navigation. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and expressed sympathy for the injured.

Ongoing Concern for Regional Stability

Minister Motegi explained that Japan closely monitors the evolving situation with great concern. He affirmed the importance of Yemen’s stability and the security of Bab al-Mandab for the safety and stability of the region and the international community, including energy security. He reiterated Japan’s continued support for the Yemeni government, particularly through maritime security partnerships and enhancing the capabilities of the Yemeni Coast Guard to help protect navigation in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
