Discussion Focuses on Yemen’s Political Landscape and Economic Challenges

On Thursday, President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, the head of the Presidential Leadership Council, welcomed Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), in New York. This meeting aimed to address the ongoing developments in Yemen and the obstacles posed by the Houthi militia.

Overview of Yemen’s Current Situation

During the meeting, President Alimi provided an update on Yemen’s political landscape, highlighting the challenges that the Houthi militia presents to mediation efforts led by Saudi Arabia and Oman. These efforts seek to initiate a comprehensive political process under the auspices of the United Nations.

Addressing Economic and Humanitarian Challenges

President Alimi also discussed the significant economic and financial challenges that the Yemeni government faces due to the ongoing conflict with the Houthi militia. He pointed out the militia’s attacks on oil facilities and international shipping routes, which exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. The President called for increased regional and international pressure to alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.

Appreciation for GCC Support

In expressing gratitude, President Alimi, on behalf of the council members and the government, acknowledged the steadfast support of the GCC and its Secretary-General for the Yemeni people and the country’s constitutional legitimacy. He emphasized the council’s crucial role in confronting the threats to Yemen’s identity and national economy and its contribution to peace efforts, particularly referencing UN Security Council Resolution 2216.

GCC’s Commitment to Yemen’s Stability

In response, Secretary-General Al-Budaiwi reaffirmed the GCC’s unwavering support for the Yemeni people and their aspirations to restore stability and peace in the country. He also mentioned the preparations underway for an international conference on food security in Yemen, along with a list of development projects funded by the GCC in the near future.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to continued collaboration. Dr. Shaaib Al-Zandani, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, also attended the discussions, emphasizing the importance of regional cooperation in addressing Yemen’s challenges.
