Yemeni Presidency Mourns the Passing of Former Vice President Ali Salem Al-Baidh

The Yemeni Presidency expressed profound sorrow over the death of former Vice President Ali Salem Al-Baidh, who passed away on Saturday. Al-Baidh dedicated his life to the struggle for his country and its people, contributing significantly to Yemen’s progress and prosperity.

A Legacy of National Service

In an official statement, the Yemeni Presidency conveyed its condolences to the nation, stating, “With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our esteemed son and courageous national leader, Ali Salem Al-Baidh, former Vice President of the Presidential Council and former Secretary-General of the Yemeni Socialist Party. He departed this life on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at the age of 86.”

The statement highlighted that Yemen lost one of its most prominent national figures and political symbols. Al-Baidh played a crucial role in the unification of Yemen on May 22, 1990, embodying the aspirations of Yemenis for a unified state based on national partnership and the rule of law.

Remembering His Contributions

The statement also reflected on Al-Baidh’s significant contributions to the national movement, which achieved independence and established a sovereign state. His passing serves as a moment for reflection on the national movement’s journey and the lessons of equitable partnership that he championed. The importance of addressing national issues through institutional dialogue remains vital for preserving the dignity of Yemenis and honoring their sacrifices, paving the way for a brighter future.

Condolences from Leadership

The President of the Presidential Leadership Council, along with council members and the government, extended heartfelt condolences to Al-Baidh’s family, comrades, and supporters. They prayed for divine mercy for the deceased and strength for his loved ones during this difficult time.

Official Mourning Period Announced

In honor of Al-Baidh’s memory, the Yemeni Presidency declared a three-day official mourning period and ordered flags to be flown at half-mast. Additionally, condolence registers will be opened both domestically and internationally to commemorate the life of this esteemed leader.
