The Ministry of Higher Education launches the inaugural national ranking of Yemeni universities.

Launch of National University Ranking in Yemen

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has initiated the evaluation of data submitted by universities participating in the national ranking of Yemeni universities. This initiative targets nine universities across three provinces: Aden, Hadramout, and Taiz.

Project Background and Development

Dr. Khaled Baslim, the Deputy Minister for the Educational Affairs Sector, explained that the ranking project commenced in 2018. It was a collaborative effort between the Ministry, Hadramout University, and the Al-Awn Foundation for Development. A memorandum of understanding was signed with Al-Awn as a supporting entity. Additionally, a series of meetings and workshops were organized under the supervision of Al-Masa, a Jordanian company specializing in international assessments, to build a qualified team for executing the national ranking process.

Overcoming Challenges and Future Plans

Dr. Baslim acknowledged that the project faced numerous challenges over the years. However, it has now reached the implementation stage with the formation of high-level committees to oversee the process. The first phase involves nine universities in the three provinces, where field visits will verify the data provided by the universities. Final results are expected by the end of February. The Ministry also plans to launch the second phase this year, targeting 30 public and private universities across various Yemeni provinces.

Importance of the National Ranking

According to Dr. Baslim, the national university ranking serves as a crucial mechanism for organizing higher education institutions based on specific criteria and indicators. The goal is to enhance development, competitiveness, and improve academic and administrative performance.

Initial Phase and Transparency Measures

Dr. Khaled Baslim, along with Dr. Ahmed Abdulsalam, the Deputy Minister for the Scientific Research Sector, and members of the ranking committee, inaugurated the first phase of the ranking in four universities in the temporary capital, Aden. These include the University of Aden, the University of the Holy Quran, the University of Justice, and the University of Science and Technology. Special forms for the ranking process were distributed to these universities to ensure transparency and accuracy in the evaluation.
