Prime Minister Meets UN Secretary-General in New York

New York, NY – Dr. Ahmed Awad Bin Mubarak, the Prime Minister of Yemen, met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN headquarters in New York. This meeting took place on the sidelines of an international ministerial meeting aimed at rallying support for the Yemeni government, organized in collaboration with the United Kingdom.

Strengthening UN-Yemen Partnership

During the meeting, the partnership between the Yemeni government and the United Nations was thoroughly reviewed. Discussions focused on ongoing efforts to establish peace amidst the persistent defiance of the Houthi militia. The militia’s escalating human rights violations, systematic warfare against the Yemeni people, and refusal to release UN and humanitarian workers were highlighted. Additionally, their attacks on international navigation were addressed.

Support for Economic Recovery

The conversation also covered UN support for the Yemeni government’s priorities and its economic recovery plan. Emphasis was placed on the need for a different approach to alter the behavior of the Houthi militia. Firm actions against their violations of humanitarian work and personnel were deemed crucial.

Commitment to Peace and Stability

Dr. Ahmed Awad Bin Mubarak conveyed greetings from Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi, Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, and other council members to the UN Secretary-General. He expressed appreciation for Guterres’ efforts to advance the peace process and alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the Yemeni people. The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the UN-led peace process based on the three agreed-upon references. He stressed the necessity of taking decisive stances to pressure the Houthi militia to cease their criminal activities against the Yemeni people and international navigation.

Addressing Economic and Humanitarian Challenges

The Prime Minister outlined the Houthi militia’s systematic economic warfare against the Yemeni people, including creating obstacles to humanitarian aid delivery and looting. He discussed the challenges arising from their terrorist attacks on oil export ports and international navigation, and the resulting economic and humanitarian impacts. The Yemeni government’s efforts to address these issues were highlighted, along with the importance of UN and international partners’ support for the national economy and ongoing reforms.

UN’s Continued Commitment

UN Secretary-General António Guterres affirmed that Yemen remains a priority for the United Nations. He expressed deep appreciation for the Yemeni government’s cooperation with the UN and its agencies. Guterres emphasized the UN’s commitment to supporting the government’s efforts and building its institutions to tackle challenges.
