Today, Yemen’s Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, signed the country’s accession to the High Seas Agreement during the United Nations’ Third Ocean Conference in Nice, France. This significant move underscores Yemen’s commitment to international environmental standards.

Strategic Step for Marine Protection

Minister Al-Sharjabi emphasized that joining this agreement marks a crucial strategic step for Yemen. It strengthens the nation’s efforts to protect marine environments. He highlighted the importance of international cooperation and joint coordination to tackle pressing environmental challenges. These challenges include marine pollution, overfishing, and climate change, all of which threaten marine ecosystems.

Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals

During the signing ceremony, attended by Deputy Minister of Transport Nasser Sharif, Maritime Affairs and Ports Undersecretary Ali Al-Sabhi, and Environmental Affairs Undersecretary Abdulhakim Alaya, Al-Sharjabi reiterated Yemen’s dedication to enhancing scientific research. He stressed the need for effective environmental governance that aligns with sustainable development goals, particularly Goal 14, which focuses on life below water.

Yemen’s signing of the High Seas Agreement represents a vital commitment to safeguarding marine resources for future generations. This initiative aligns with a national vision aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and ensuring a prosperous future for oceans and marine biodiversity.
