On Wednesday, Dr. Abdul Salam Hamid, the Minister of Transport, inaugurated the new airport on Abd al-Kuri Island. He was joined by Raafat Al-Thaqili, the Governor of Socotra Archipelago, and Captain Saleh Bin Naheed, the Head of the General Authority for Civil Aviation and Meteorology.
Minister Hamid emphasized that the airport will significantly improve connectivity between Abd al-Kuri Island, the Socotra Archipelago, and the rest of the world. He pointed out that the island has long suffered from isolation and a lack of basic human services, including education, healthcare, clean water, and communication infrastructure.
The Minister assured that the Ministry of Transport will prioritize Abd al-Kuri Island and the Socotra Archipelago. He stated that they will coordinate with the government and the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation to implement vital projects. This includes developing existing facilities like the airport and the port. He also expressed gratitude to the United Arab Emirates for its ongoing support, which has significantly improved the quality of life in Socotra and Yemen as a whole.
Captain Saleh Bin Naheed highlighted the authority’s commitment to ensuring the airport meets all operational needs. He mentioned plans to provide qualified personnel in air navigation and technical and administrative fields. Additionally, he noted that the authority will work with the International Civil Aviation Organization to secure an independent code for the airport, similar to other airports in the country.
Governor Raafat Al-Thaqili expressed his immense satisfaction with this achievement, which he believes will strengthen the island’s ties to the broader archipelago. He announced plans for a residential unit that will include 95 homes, along with a hospital and a school. The governor praised the support from the United Arab Emirates, which has been instrumental in the province’s development.
The opening of the airport on Abd al-Kuri Island marks a significant step toward improving infrastructure and services in the region. With ongoing support and development plans, the future looks promising for the residents of Socotra Archipelago.
