King Salman Humanitarian Aid Center Extends Mine Clearance Project in Yemen

The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center has announced the extension of the "Masam" project, aimed at clearing landmines in Yemen, for an additional year. The extension comes with a budget of $52,994,413.

Project Overview

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the project employs Saudi personnel alongside global experts. Yemeni teams, trained specifically for this task, work to remove various types of landmines that have been indiscriminately planted across Yemeni territory. The primary goal is to eliminate the dangers posed by these mines, which threaten the lives of innocent civilians. Additionally, the project focuses on training and building the capacity of Yemeni personnel in mine clearance operations.

Commitment to Humanitarian Responsibility

Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, advisor at the Royal Court and general supervisor of the center, emphasized the humanitarian responsibility the center feels towards its Yemeni counterparts. He stated, “Renewing this contract with our implementing partner reflects our commitment to the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. This project plays a crucial role in the ongoing effort to clear the land of mines that have been planted in unprecedented and indiscriminate ways, targeting vulnerable civilians. These mines have caused permanent injuries, chronic disabilities, and numerous fatalities, particularly among women, children, and the elderly.”

Achievements to Date

Since its inception, the "Masam" project has successfully removed 495,855 landmines and unexploded ordnance. This significant achievement underscores the project’s impact on enhancing safety and security for the Yemeni population.

Conclusion

The extension of the "Masam" project highlights the ongoing commitment to humanitarian efforts in Yemen. As the situation continues to evolve, initiatives like this remain vital for restoring safety and stability in the region.
