Strengthening Maritime Security: EU and Yemen Coast Guard Collaborate

In a significant meeting today in the temporary capital of Aden, Major General Khaled Al-Qamli, Head of the Coast Guard Authority, engaged with Gabriel Moniera Vinyals, Head of the European Union Mission to Yemen, and Janneke Sieben, the Dutch Ambassador. The discussion focused on enhancing cooperation to support the capabilities of the Coast Guard and improve maritime security coordination.

Commitment to Maritime Stability

Major General Al-Qamli emphasized the importance of this visit, highlighting the European Union’s commitment to bolstering maritime security in Yemen and the surrounding region. He praised the EU for its support, particularly through an emergency initiative aimed at strengthening the Coast Guard. Al-Qamli reiterated the necessity of ongoing collaboration to enhance the technical and operational readiness of the Coast Guard, as well as to develop its institutional and technical capabilities.

The Role of the Coast Guard in National Security

The Coast Guard plays a crucial role in securing Yemen’s ports and protecting its coastlines. Al-Qamli noted that supporting the Coast Guard directly contributes to the stability of international maritime routes. He expressed hope for an expanded scope of European support for the Coast Guard in the upcoming phases.

Upcoming Maritime Security Conference

Al-Qamli also expressed his anticipation for active participation from EU member states in the upcoming Yemeni Maritime Security Partnership Conference, which is set to take place soon.

European Delegation Tour

Following the meeting, the European delegation, accompanied by Al-Qamli, conducted a maritime tour of Aden Port. During this visit, they observed the operations of the Coast Guard units and received a brief overview of the challenges and field missions faced by the personnel.

This collaboration marks a pivotal step towards enhancing maritime security in Yemen, ensuring safer waters for both national and international interests.
