The Chairman of the Leadership Council warns that international inaction on Houthi aggression may encourage other terrorist organizations.

President Alimi Calls for International Designation of Houthi Militias as Terrorist Organization

A Renewed Appeal to the Global Community

Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, President of the Presidential Leadership Council, has reiterated his call for the international community to classify the Houthi militia as a global terrorist organization. This classification aims to implement a comprehensive deterrence policy that encourages the group to engage seriously in efforts for a just and sustainable peace.

Houthi Alliances and Threats

During a session organized by the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, President Alimi highlighted the dangers posed by the Houthi militia’s connections and alliances with terrorist organizations both within and outside Yemen. He also pointed to the extensive networks involved in arms trafficking throughout the region.

Shifting Strategies Against Houthi Attacks

President Alimi expressed his vision for how the international coalition should respond to Houthi attacks on maritime shipping. He emphasized the need to transition from a policy of containment to implementing deterrent measures and establishing a strategic partnership. This shift aims to prevent other terrorist organizations from adopting similar tactics.

Emerging Threats in the Red Sea

In this context, President Alimi noted that despite international efforts to address the threat posed by the Safer oil tanker in recent years, “we now face a similar danger with every tanker and vessel that passes through the Red Sea due to the Houthi militia’s terrorist attacks.”

Misconceptions About Houthi Attacks

The president clarified that the belief linking Houthi attacks to the Israeli conflict with the Palestinian people is misguided. He stated that ending these attacks is not contingent upon a ceasefire in Gaza.

Iran’s Role in Regional Instability

Furthermore, President Alimi warned that the Red Sea has been weaponized, with international trade routes and maritime environments being used as tools for extortion. He indicated that this situation will persist, fueled by Iran and its affiliated militias.

Commitment to Restoring State Institutions

President Alimi affirmed that dismantling the Houthi coup and restoring state institutions will remain a top priority for the Presidential Leadership Council, the government, and the Yemeni people. He also emphasized the council’s commitment to a just and sustainable peace based on agreed-upon references, including international legitimacy and UN Resolution 2216.

Addressing Yemen’s Challenges

The president outlined the significant political, military, security, economic, and social challenges facing the Yemeni government due to the Iranian-backed Houthi coup. He called for the support of regional allies and friends to help the Presidential Leadership Council and the government navigate these difficulties. President Alimi acknowledged the crucial role played by the coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which has consistently supported Yemen during various stages and circumstances.

In conclusion, President Alimi’s remarks underscore the urgent need for a united international response to the Houthi threat and a commitment to restoring stability in Yemen.
