The assassination of a tribal leader in Amran has sparked widespread tension and tribal unrest against the Houthis.

Assassination of Tribal Leader Sparks Tensions in Yemen

Incident Overview

In a shocking incident, armed men affiliated with the Houthi militia assassinated Sheikh Ali Salah Jatoum in the Al-Amashiya area of Harf Sufyan District, located in northern Yemen’s Amran Governorate. The attack occurred as Sheikh Jatoum drove along the road connecting Amran and Saada, where assailants opened fire on him, resulting in his immediate death.

Details of the Attack

According to media reports, the Houthi militants stopped Sheikh Jatoum under the pretense that he was a wanted individual. They demanded that he board a military vehicle belonging to them. When he refused, they shot him before fleeing the scene.

Tribal Response

Following the assassination, tribal groups from the Dhuhum tribe, to which the slain Sheikh belonged, mobilized to surround the Houthi-controlled Sufyan Security Administration. They described their actions as a form of “tribal retaliation,” demanding the immediate surrender of the perpetrators. Tensions escalated, raising concerns about potential clashes if the militia continued to delay accountability.

Context of Violence

This assassination adds to a troubling pattern of targeted killings and systematic elimination of tribal leaders in Houthi-controlled areas over recent years. Many accuse the militia of intensifying repression against tribal leadership, aiming to undermine local communities and convert them into tools for supporting the Houthi armed agenda.

The situation remains volatile as the community seeks justice for Sheikh Jatoum, highlighting the ongoing struggle for power and influence in Yemen’s complex landscape.
