Amran, a city in Yemen, faces an unprecedented water crisis that has persisted for nearly a month. The local water authority, under Houthi control, has halted water supply, leaving residents in dire straits. This stoppage coincides with the worsening living conditions of the population, who feel completely neglected by the Houthi leadership, which has failed to propose any solutions to the ongoing problem.
Local sources indicate that the Houthi authorities stopped the water supply, claiming that a pump malfunctioned. However, no maintenance efforts or alternative solutions have been provided for the citizens. Consequently, residents have resorted to purchasing water from private tankers at exorbitant prices, which are unaffordable for many families.
Even the option to buy water has become increasingly difficult. Tanker owners prefer to sell water to qat farms, which offer higher payments. This preference has led to a backlog of tankers at commercial pumps, delaying water delivery to residents. Many families now wait days for a single tanker to arrive.
Residents have expressed their outrage over the Houthi authorities’ disregard for their suffering. They demand urgent repairs to the malfunctioning pump and the resumption of water supply. Additionally, they highlight the need to address the salinity issue affecting water quality. Pressuring the Houthis to fulfill their responsibilities as the governing authority is crucial for resolving this crisis.
