A report from the Moral Guidance Department of the Taiz Military Axis has revealed the devastating toll of Houthi militia violence on civilians in Taiz Province, Yemen. Since March 2015, over 24,000 civilians have fallen victim—either killed or wounded—by the Iran-backed Houthi forces through gunfire, shelling, and landmines.
A Detailed Look at the Statistics
The report, covering the period from March 21, 2015, to mid-2024, documents the Houthi militias’ crimes against civilians over 3,300 days. These acts of violence include indiscriminate shelling and sniper attacks, resulting in 4,146 civilian deaths, including 891 children and 466 women. Additionally, 18,065 people have been injured, among them 2,176 children and 2,669 women.
Landmines and explosive devices, planted haphazardly by the Houthi forces in residential areas and roads, have killed 781 civilians, including 38 children and 23 women, and injured 1,308 others, with children and women among the casualties.
Kidnappings, Forced Disappearances, and Displacements
The report also highlights over 6,024 violations in the form of kidnappings, forced disappearances, and arbitrary detentions by the Houthi militias, leading to 102 cases of death and disability. Moreover, the militias have committed 108 assaults on civilians and forcibly displaced 4,269 families.
Destruction of Public and Private Property
The Houthi aggression has led to the destruction of 617 public facilities and properties, including the complete destruction of 62 public facilities and partial damage to 379 others. Additionally, 31 public establishments were stormed and looted.
On the private front, 3,617 facilities and properties have been destroyed, including 169 explosions and 224 complete demolitions. Partial damages were inflicted on 2,020 buildings and facilities, with 623 private vehicles damaged and 53 buildings and facilities looted.
The report sheds light on the extensive human and material cost inflicted by the Houthi militias in Taiz since 2015. The detailed statistics not only underscore the severity of the conflict’s impact on civilians but also highlight the urgent need for a resolution to restore peace and security in the region.
