Prime Minister and WHO Representative Discuss Strengthening Yemen’s Health System

Prime Minister Engages with WHO for Health Sector Enhancement

In a significant meeting held today in the temporary capital of Aden, Dr. Shai Mohsen Al-Zandani, who serves as both Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, welcomed Mr. Jaafar Hussein, the World Health Organization (WHO) representative and head of the organization’s mission in Yemen. The discussions centered on strategies to strengthen collaboration in support of Yemen’s health sector.

Aiming for a Strategic Partnership

During the meeting, Prime Minister Al-Zandani articulated Yemen’s aspiration for a strategic partnership with the WHO. He highlighted the urgent need to transition from emergency responses to proactive measures, with a focus on prevention, preparedness, and the establishment of sustainable health systems that can withstand future challenges.

Addressing Epidemic Challenges and Supporting Vulnerable Populations

The leaders emphasized the critical importance of intensifying efforts to combat epidemics, specifically cholera, malaria, and dengue fever, as the summer months approach. They acknowledged the necessity of addressing pathogens linked to food safety and drinking water, stressing the need for enhanced preventive measures to curb the spread of these diseases.

Furthermore, the meeting underscored the imperative of supporting vulnerable populations, particularly children and women. The leaders discussed promoting integration between the health sector and government initiatives, aiming to elevate the quality of health services across the nation.

Strengthening the Health Infrastructure

Both leaders concurred on the importance of fortifying the health system through comprehensive training for healthcare personnel. They explored avenues for enhancing vaccination programs and health security, alongside localizing treatment services. Additionally, they recognized the critical need for sustainable funding and improved institutional coordination in collaboration with relevant national authorities.

This meeting represents a crucial step towards reinforcing Yemen’s health infrastructure, ultimately seeking to ensure better health outcomes for its citizens.
