Efforts to Clear Landmines in Yemen Continue

The “Masan” project, dedicated to removing landmines in Yemen, has reported significant progress in its operations. As of March 27, the teams have successfully cleared 5,237 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive devices since the beginning of the month. This ongoing effort aims to secure land and protect civilians from the dangers posed by remnants of war.

Weekly Achievements Highlighted

According to a statement from the project’s media office, teams removed 1,737 landmines and unexploded ordnance last week alone. This total includes 1,732 pieces of unexploded ordnance and five anti-personnel mines addressed during the fourth week of March. These figures underscore the persistent threat that remnants of conflict pose in various regions of Yemen.

Cumulative Impact of the Project

The operations room revealed that the total number of items cleared since March includes 4,965 pieces of unexploded ordnance, 242 anti-tank mines, 17 anti-personnel mines, and 13 explosive devices. This data reflects the ongoing risks associated with war remnants in the country.

In the Midi district, the project has removed a total of 8,254 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive devices since its inception. This figure highlights the extensive efforts made in one of the most heavily affected areas by landmines.

Project Director’s Insights

Osama Al-Qusabi, the project director, announced that since the project’s launch in late June 2018, teams have cleared 551,189 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive devices as of March 27. This effort continues to focus on securing Yemeni land and ensuring civilian safety.

Al-Qusabi detailed that the total cleared includes 384,967 pieces of unexploded ordnance and 150,682 anti-tank mines. These numbers illustrate the significant challenges faced by demining teams in the country.

Diverse Threats Addressed

Additionally, the teams have removed 7,122 anti-personnel mines and 8,418 explosive devices since the project’s start. This variety of threats emphasizes the complexity and danger of the remnants being dealt with.

Land Cleared for Community Safety

Since its inception, “Masan” has successfully cleared approximately 77,994,590 square meters of land in Yemen. This achievement has opened up vast areas for residents, significantly reducing the risks posed by landmines.
