The Assembly of Kosovo elected Justina Shiroka-Bula as the new president today.
Shiroka-Bula, nominated by Prime Minister Albin Kurti, received 81 votes in a ballot that began just minutes before the deadline on October 6 and concluded shortly after midnight.
Shiroka-Bula served as the Minister of Energy and Mining in Kosovo from 2008 to 2011. She was a member of the Liberal Democratic Party of Kosovo from 2011 to 2014. Since December, Shiroka-Bula has led the Academy of Sciences and Arts in Kosovo, becoming the first woman to hold this position.
The presidential position remained vacant since April when Vjosa Osmani’s term ended. Attempts to elect a successor failed due to insufficient attendance from Assembly members during the selection session.
According to the Constitution of Kosovo, at least 80 out of 120 Assembly members must attend the parliamentary session to elect a new president.
