The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has issued a stark warning about the escalating food insecurity in Sudan. According to a recent report published in Al-Madina newspaper, 19.5 million people, representing 41% of the population, will face severe hunger levels by early next year.
The report, which spans the period from February 2026 to January 2027, highlights alarming statistics. It reveals that 135,000 individuals currently live in catastrophic conditions classified as Phase Five on the food security scale, the highest level of risk. Additionally, over 5 million people are experiencing food emergencies, while 14.3 million suffer from acute food crises.
This warning underscores the worsening humanitarian situation in Sudan, exacerbated by ongoing conflict and deteriorating essential services. The international community has increasingly called for urgent humanitarian assistance to address this escalating crisis.
As the situation develops, it is crucial for global stakeholders to respond promptly to mitigate the impact of this food insecurity on millions of vulnerable individuals in Sudan. The need for immediate relief efforts has never been more pressing.
