In exchange for their release, Houthi militants force dozens of prisoners into recruitment efforts.

Houthi Militias Force Prisoners into Combat Roles in Hajjah

Recent reports from Hajjah province reveal alarming practices by Houthi militias, who are coercing dozens of prisoners to join their combat ranks. This recruitment strategy involves a controversial deal that trades the prisoners’ freedom for their participation in military activities.

Exploiting Summer Activities for Recruitment

Sources indicate that the Houthis have manipulated what they term "summer activities" to subject approximately 120 detainees from the Criminal Investigation Department to intensive military training. This month-long program has resulted in the recruitment of nearly 80 prisoners, who have been integrated into units known as "Gharimeen Battalions." These newly formed groups have already participated in military displays organized by the militia.

Systematic Violations and Coercion

According to the sources, the prisoners feel compelled to accept this coercive arrangement due to the systematic physical and psychological abuses they endure within the prisons. Reports from "Asharq Al-Awsat" highlight the dire conditions that lead many to comply with the militia’s demands.

Resistance and Continued Abuse

In contrast, around 40 prisoners have resisted joining the fight. Their refusal has resulted in further violations, including the denial of basic rights and restrictions on family visits. This ongoing mistreatment underscores the harsh realities faced by those who stand against the militia’s coercive tactics.

Urgent Call for Human Rights Intervention

Families of the detained individuals have issued an urgent appeal to human rights organizations. They demand immediate intervention to halt these violations and pressure the militia to release their loved ones without conditions or extortion. The situation in Hajjah raises significant concerns about human rights and the treatment of prisoners in conflict zones.
