In a significant meeting held today in the temporary capital of Aden, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, Salem Al-Saqtri, engaged with a delegation from the World Bank to discuss preparations for launching a series of agricultural, irrigation, and food security projects in Yemen.
The discussions highlighted the arrangements for initiating the first phase of the Early Warning and Information Systems Project in Yemen. This phase includes conducting studies and analyses to establish a water and climate database in two key basins: Wadi Hadhramaut and Wadi Tuban, located in Hadhramaut and Lahij governorates, respectively. The project is set to commence in October 2025, with preparations already underway for its second phase.
The meeting also addressed the Integrated Water Resource Management Project, which is currently in the preparation stage. This initiative aims to restore existing water facilities, construct new ones, and enhance the institutional capacity of the ministry and its offices.
Minister Al-Saqtri praised the World Bank-funded projects in Yemen, emphasizing the necessity of coordination between the ministry, the World Bank, and various implementing partners throughout all planning and execution phases. He stressed the importance of directing support to areas in need and ensuring the sustainability of projects. Additionally, he highlighted the critical need for establishing a water and climate database linked to the ministry’s information center.
In response, the World Bank’s technical team reaffirmed the bank’s full commitment to supporting the ministry. They aim to enhance the capabilities of its staff and institutions while transitioning from emergency operations to infrastructure projects. This shift will help ensure the sustainability of interventions and achieve long-term developmental impacts.
This collaboration marks a pivotal step towards improving Yemen’s agricultural landscape and addressing food security challenges. The ongoing partnership between the Yemeni government and the World Bank promises to foster resilience and growth in the region.
