A recent report by the rights organization “Rights Radar” highlights a troubling increase in violations related to freedom of thought and belief in Yemen. The report covers the period from September 2014 to December 2025, revealing that these violations extend beyond restrictions on religious practices. They now include killings, injuries, arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, torture, and attacks on places of worship. The report specifically targets religious advocates, religious figures, and members of minority faiths across various provinces.
The report documents the deaths of 190 individuals and injuries to 169 others among religious advocates and minority groups. Assassinations represent the most common method of killing, with the provinces of Aden, Sana’a, Taiz, Hadramout, and Al-Bayda recording the highest number of incidents.
The report identifies various groups responsible for these violations, prominently including the Houthi movement, Al-Qaeda, and armed factions. Additionally, a significant number of cases remain attributed to unidentified entities, raising concerns about accountability.
The report emphasizes that the ongoing violations, coupled with a lack of accountability, severely undermine freedom of religion and belief. This situation weakens the legal protections for religious figures and minorities, leaving them vulnerable to further abuses.
In light of these findings, the report calls for independent investigations into the violations. It urges authorities to hold perpetrators accountable, release individuals detained for their beliefs or opinions, and enhance the protection of places of worship. Furthermore, it stresses the importance of respecting the rights and freedoms guaranteed by international law.
The situation in Yemen remains critical, and immediate action is necessary to safeguard the rights of all individuals, regardless of their beliefs.
